Despite having an illustrious career that includes designing Seattle's glassy public library and Milan's lovely new Fondazione Prada, Rem Koolhaas's firm OMA has never done a ground-up building in New York City. The firm has been responsible for renovations and retail designs (more Prada, of course), but never a full building design—until now.
6sqft first reported that OMA will design the building that's soon to rise on the site of United Cerebral Palsy's Gramercy headquarters on East 23rd Street, and while the Real Deal confirmed that Koolhaas himself won't be the lead architect—partner Shohei Shigematsu apparently has that honor—it's still a pretty big deal for the firm. According to DOB filings, the building will have 133 units spread out over 225,223 square feet of space.
Toll Brothers purchased the site in 2013 for $135 million, and have been working toward this condo conversion ever since.
