In 2017, developer Joseph Chetrit listed three gigantic townhouses on East 76th Street—created by combining six brownstones into fewer, but larger, megamansions—with enormous price tags to match. They range from 13,000 to 15,000 square feet, and the cheapest is on the market for $39 million.
The largest and priciest, asking $51 million, is located at 110 East 76th Street—and this spring, the hoi polloi will have the chance to step inside the rarefied piece of real estate, as it serves as the canvas for the 2018 Kips Bay Decorator Show House. More than 20 interior designers will put their stamp on the mansion’s myriad rooms as part of the event, which happens each May.
Put on by the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, the event has garnered a well-deserved reputation as the crème de la crème of interior events in New York City, with designers like Thom Filicia, Victoria Hagan, and Vicente Wolf participating in years past.
This year’s pick offers plenty of space for designers to work with: The 15,000-square-foot home has an eye-popping eight bedrooms—one of which is a master suite bigger than most New Yorkers’ apartments—10 bathrooms, a landscaped backyard, a roof terrace, a grand staircase, and more.
And the choice of the East 76th Street townhouse continues the trend of using a palatial—and on-the-market—townhouse for the event: In 2017, China Institute’s former Upper East Side HQ was the backdrop; in 2016, Extell’s Carlton House mansion served as the canvas; in 2015, designers took over the Arthur Sachs mansion on East 66th Street.
