Sacrilege in Tribeca: the Statue of Liberty crown atop El Teddy's, the famed neighborhood haunt long featured in the opening credits of Saturday Night Live, has been dismembered after attempts to find it a new home failed. "The crown's five steel spikes lay scattered about on the roof, alongside sections of its base and rusting metal frame," reports the Tribeca Trib. (Separately, New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones notes on his blog that at one point after the crown's removal last month, the roof caught fire.) Closed since January, El Teddy's is being demolished to make way for -- you see this coming, right? -- a new six-story condo development.
