Investigators are still trying to figure out the hows and whys of what we might call Dirtgate, the disappearance of 15 truck loads of (possibly) toxic dirt and rubble from the sprawling Ikea site on the Red Hook waterfront. The Brooklyn Paper does a followup this week, including demands by some neigbhborhood types for a full investigation and suggestions that the dirt was made to disappear so as to more easily dispose of things like asbestos and lead. Says a member of the local Community Board: “This is highly suspicious. What are they trying to cover up?” Equally interesting is the photo above showing the big bite taken out of the mountain by the rubble that just, um, vanished.
