The ten-story, 80 unit coop building called Atlantic Terrace on the edge of Fort Greene had a tiny moment of notoriety back in 2003. The building was supposed to include rooftop solar panels. Then, details about the Atlantic Yards project nearly across the street were unveiled and it turned out that Frank Gehry's 30- to 50-story buildings would cast shadows over it. The darkness wouldn't be there all the time, but for enough time that solar panels wouldn't work unless someone designs ones that don't need light. In any case, the 80 unit affordable coop at South Oxford Street and Atlantic Avenue in Fort Greene broke ground yesterday, without the solar panels. There are other eco-friendly features though, and great views of any Atlantic Yards construction effort.
