Remember the battle over landmarking Sunnyside Gardens? Well, it's still not a done deal, although things appear to be moving in that direction. The Landmarks Commission voted back in June to create what would be Queens' largest historic district, and yesterday a City Council Committee gave it a unanimous thumbs up. The neighborhood, which is a planned community from the 1920s, is known for its low-rise housing and, well, its gardens. (You can find it on a map here.) The district would include 624 buildings over 16 blocks. There's been a lot of controversy in the neighborhood about landmarking, though, with some groups strongly opposing it and others in favor of it. There will be a full City Council vote on Tuesday.
