Ah, the Brooklyn House of Detention, aka the Jail with Retail (and formerly condos) at Atlantic Avenue and Smith Street. A couple of days the city tried to build interest in the jail with retail concept by releasing a rendering from Skidmore Owings & Merrill of what the jail would look like at street level if it's doubled in size and gets retail storefronts. Well, a tipster just deluged our inbox with a bunch of long documents showing "an alternate proposal" for the space, which appears to be a proposal for a jail with retail and condos, that the city rejected. This proposal, which involved Hamlin Ventures and Time Equities, would have "reduced the size and visibility" of the jail component, put in 200 beds for two alternate programs and added 300 units of affordable housing, 190 units of market rates housing and retail. (The proposal was heavy on pushing alternatives to old-fashioned incarceration.) Oh, and it promised "world class architecture and urban design." Architects on the project were Rogers Marvel and MVRDV of Rotterdam.
