Just east of Tompkins Square Park on Avenue B, the 159-year-old St. Brigid's church has been staring down the wrecking ball since the parish closed in 2004, and then staring it down even more intensely over the last couple of years, after a judge denied a bid to block demolition. The old girl, buoyed by community efforts to save it but left pretty much to rot, has been standing ever since. Now, reports Newsday, the most unlikely of developments: An anonymous $10 million donation to the Archdiocese has saved St. Brigid's. Following repairs to the building, the church will reopen. The Save St. Brigid website, most likely in a state of shock, does not have much to say about this stunning turn of events. Well, now that the St. Bridig's controversy is settled, can we see about its neighbor, CHARAS/El Bohio, next? Someone pony up!
