There are few noteworthy modern structures in all of New York City whose story is sadder than the slowly rotting New York State Pavilion in Flushing Meadow Park designed by Phillip Johnson for the 1964-65 World's Fair. Now, contractors are taking down a "sky streak" elevator from one of its towers that has stood frozen in time for more than four decades. Preservationists are afraid that it's a prelude to eventual demolition. [NYDN]
