West Chelsea is in a state of construction overdrive, and because of all the blockbuster names involved with many of these projects, smaller developments may get overlooked. That appears to have happened at 552 West 24th Street, which not only has to compete with the starchitects' creations, but also must be sandwiched behind one. The narrow construction plot, which just got slapped with the sign/rendering above, is directly behind Annabelle Selldorf's 200 Eleventh Avenue?the Dolce-housing, car-elevator-having, gunmetal-glazed showstopper. In fact, in the 552 West 24th Street rendering, Selldorf's building takes up half the picture. The website of architects/development advisers DeArch calls the newby the "Chelsea Gallery Apartments," and DOB permits show that this creation has come a long way. It was going to be an 11-story Peter Poon Architects design, with gallery space below and 10 residential units above. Given the current working title, we assume the gallery angle is still in play. Hey, you gotta have a hook in this crazy 'hood.
