Developers aren't exactly clamoring for their services these days, so local architects are moving on to bigger and better things, like saving New York City from natural disaster. The Museum of Modern Art has announced the teams of architects that will be participating in its out-of-work architect re-employment plan Rising Currents project, which will employ four teams of architects, engineers, and landscape designers to come up with alternative designs for New York's waterfronts. The goal: protecting the city from storm surges and flooding. The four sets of secret architect superheroes who might just save us all are Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, and David Lewis of LTL Architects, plus their team members; Matthew Baird of Matthew Baird Architects and his team; Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang of nARCHITECTS and their team; and Kate Orff of SCAPE Studio and her team. Will they choose to bring wetlands back to Staten Island? Will they adaptively reuse old subway cars to create reefs? All will be revealed at a MoMA exhibition starting in March.
