Brooklyn Bridge Park Watch

Slow and Steady Brooklyn Bridge Park Will Wait Until 2010

2009_11_bkbridgepier1.jpg

To the surprise of no one following the slow and painful birth of Brooklyn Bridge Park over the years, the opening of the first section of the park—the Brooklyn Bridge-hugging Pier 1—has been delayed. But just a little! The lush lawn was supposed to silence the doubters by opening in 2009, but the Daily News reports that the ribbon-cutting has been pushed back to January to avoid conflicting with Santa Claus. Meanwhile, the fast-tracked Pier 6 was also eying "preliminary" completion this year, but that charade has been dropped and spring is the new target. You can't rush a good beach volleyball court.
