Another piece of Lincoln Center's renovation is getting unveiled today: the design for a black box theater on the roof of the existing Beaumont Theater. The black box (rendered above, and intended to show the work of emerging artists) was designed by Hugh Hardy, whose roots at the Beaumont go back to his days as an assistant on the original early 1960s Eero Saarinen design. Hardy describes his 131-seat Beaumont addition as a "gentle" modification of the existing design. The Landmarks Preservation Commission, which advised on the plans, agreed, and construction's slated to begin in March (with completion set for late 2011 or early 2012). But preservationists have slightly different feelings about the project. They've accused Hardy of creating a big boxy thing that would mess up the existing design and be too visible from the street. Just what are they talking about?
Hardy's team prepped the above rendering to show how much the new addition will stick out. Too much?
