Of course 979 Willoughby Avenue wasn't designed by Brooklyn's Greatest Architect to be homes for ex-cons. Back in 2007 developers called the neighborhood "the next great hipster haven" and priced apartments up to $688,000. The plan didn't quite work out, and now local paper the Times Newsweekly reports neighbors are enraged that the developers have contracted to operate a halfway house in the building without notifying the community. Said the district manager for the local community board, "It's obvious that people need someplace to go, but there's a right way and a wrong way. We are a community that is besieged by halfway houses." Yeah, but how many have those sweet sweet Scarano mezzanines?
