The historic Loew's Pitkin Theater out in Brownsville has been closed for 40 years, and falling apart for a few more. But despite the rotted state of this 157,000-square-foot behemoth, there's value in those moldings?or what's left of them. And so last week, developer POKO Partners broke ground on an ambitious adaptive re-use project that will turn the 1929 building into a state-of-the-art K-8 charter school and retail space, all while retaining the historical character of the building. Kitchen & Associates is the architect, and after getting a look around the building during last week's groundbreaking (Brownstoner was also there), we can safely say the only objections to this makeover will be lodged by the ghosts being displaced by the renovation, and Mike Tyson.
