The High Line has some new additions, both at the uptown end of the park's under-construction Section 2, and farther downtown where the Whitney Museum has something in store. Up north along 30th Street, where the elevated tracks bend west towards the Hudson River, the framework for yet another glass elevator, one of the signature design elements by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, has gone up along the promenade in the sky. The steel rises over the rails, providing a bit of company for Ohm, the tall tower of partydom down the block. Section 2 is scheduled to open next spring, so there's still plenty of time to get this thing moving.
Meanwhile, back downtown along Gansevoort Street, where the High Line comes to an end where the Whitney Museum has staked a claim, artist Barbara Kruger has tagged the entire site with an installation showing words of wit and wisdom. Bold block letters greet park visitors, declaring that ART is "FUGITIVE AS FRAUD." Old timers, seeing MEAT and LEATHER and FLESH emblazoned above the sidewalk, might think the clock has been rolled back to the dirty old days before this part of town went all swank. Kruger views the work as a remembrance of life downtown, "a gathering of words about history, value, and the pleasures and pains of social life." The installation will be on view through October 17.
