Harrison Ford has been known to give his neighbors an occasional striptease, but after prancing around in his skivvies atop Chelsea's 206 West 17th Street for nearly a decade, he's taking the show on the road. Ford's 5,500-square-foot penthouse loft, with 4 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms and a 2,300-square-foot private roof terrace, has just hit the market through Corcoran superbroker Deborah Grubman (her husband, entertainment lawyer Allen Grubman, has worked with Ford) for $16 million. The starchitecture boom along the High Line has led to similar price tags in the neighborhood, but for an "authentic" Chelsea loft?the building, also known as the City Prairie, was once the warehouse and offices for Barney's?this is rarefied air...force one. It's flying Han Solo. It has kept up with the Indiana Joneses. We'll stop now. So what's he giving up?
The building was converted by celeb-friendly developer Cary Tamarkin into 11 raw full-floor lofts at the turn of the century, hence those new-old windows that are so hot right now. According to reports at the time, Ford ditched Central Park West after he got divorced, and then settled into this downtown condo near the start of 2002. It was listed for $6.25 million, but according to StreetEasy records, he paid about $5.3 million. (Janet Jackson also reportedly bought in the building.) A trustee named Brian J. Murphy, no stranger to celebrity transactions, was listed on the deed.
Ford enlisted 1100 Architect, the go-to renovators for rich folks looking to keep things spare yet luxurious, and years later, it looks like the place has held up pretty well. But is it worth $16 million? We'll leave it up to the market to decide. Ford and his longtime consort/new bride Calista Flockhart also own residences in Wyoming and Los Angeles.
