The Curbed Cup, our annual award to the New York City neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 'hoods vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have two matchups per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends in the wee hours the next morning. Let the eliminations commence!
This isn't the High Line environs' first appearance in the Curbed Cup, but as the park keeps growing into Phase II and starchitecture appears to be defeating the recession, is this West Chelsea's year to take home the top prize? Speaking of parks, some new parts of Hudson River Park also opened this year. And for those who aren't yet at the starchitecture or curvy balcony stage, a few long frozen rental projects are finally coming back to life. And, of course, the kids love it!
On the other side this morning is another old place made new: the one, the only Governors Island. This was a year of much dreaming for the now-mainstream tourist destination that is not a park but is finally controlled by the city. The state-city transfer ended the island's budget woes, which means it's time to look to the future. There were more new renderings for the marshlands, artificial hills, hammock grove, and architecture set to come to the island over the next few years. There might not be a giant Ferris wheel, but speaking of wacky schemes, NYU still has the island in its sights.
