So much for wanting to keep renting. Yankee third baseman and perpetual apartment hunter Alex Rodriguez is giving up his 15 Central Park West rental?it wasn't "private enough," the Post speculates, because of all the prospective buyers walking through?but not for any of the flashy pads he's been spotted visiting. Instead, A-Rod has a deal to buy the 35th floor of the Rushmore, the lawsuit- and typo-plagued building on the Upper West Side. (Better check that contract carefully, A-Rod!) The Journal reports that A-Rod will pay between $5.5 million and $6 million for the 4BR pad (with an optional fifth bedroom or library). The building's developer, Gary Barnett, left the negotiating process with these insights into A-Rod's psyche: he "loved the building, the park and the water views, but we think the clincher was the baseball field outside the front door." Hey, at least somebody will be using it.
The $5.5 to $6 million price range on this deal is low for a celebrity (especially considering the rest of A-Rod's real estate hunt), but not so low for the building, where StreetEasy shows 4BRs listed for anywhere from $3.455 million to $4.435 million, and a few in contract for more. And, Barnett tells the Journal, A-Rod could have gotten a lower price when he first visited the building a year ago, before sales improved. Tough luck!
In lieu of listing pics or a floorplan, neither of which is available online, we present an artist's rendering of A-Rod using one of the building's most celebrated amenities, the La Palestra fitness center:
