Once home to Greenwich Village bohemia, Eighth Street is suffering and NYU may/may not be to blame. Funny enough, NYU commissioned a study of the "soft" economic areas along the corridor, now a hodgepodge of low-budget retail stores. Outré costumer Patricia Field, pushed out of her building at #10 in 1996, places the burden of its bygone glory days squarely on the university, saying through a spokesperson: "NYU killed Eighth Street."
