We would've preferred the return of checkers, but New York City's new line of 5 boro cabs is differentiating itself from standard yellow taxis with its green paint job. Mayor Bloomberg calls the color Apple Green, although the Times drooled over the hue, thinking lime, mint, and wasabi. Others stuck with the food theme, but went in another direction; Gothamist called it "puke green." Whatever you name its shade, the new color marks the introduction of 5 Boro Taxis that are allowed to pick up street hails in outer borough areas that are considered underserved by traditional yellow taxis. Taxi & Limousine Commissioner David Yassky said that Apple Green was chosen as the color because "the color is pleasing to the eye, easy to see from a distance and blends well with the urban landscape." And just like green surgical scrubs, the blood of too-slow pedestrians isn't as jarring on the hood of a green car. We hope that Bloomberg's Apple Green identification won't elicit too many thoughts of Granny Smith green apples, and earn the cabs the nickname "Tart Carts". What does the new shade of taxi look like to you? Let us know in the comments.
