Curbed commenters had no kind words for John Madden's decor when the NFL coach and broadcaster listed his 2BR/2.5BA at the Dakota last year. The layout and design complaints?even with the apartment's private entrance off the courtyardmight indeed explain the journey #17S has gone through over the past year. It got PriceChopped once, from the initial ask of $4.9 million to $4.395 million, and then came off the market in early April. It returned at the again-reduced ask of $3.9 million. New broker, slightly different photos, and an ID as #17SPECIAL instead of plain old #17S: will it work?
It almost doesn't matter. Madden's already living full-time on the West Coast, so he presumably doesn't need to sink the profits from this sale into a new place. He also spent just $625,000 when he bought the apartment from Gilda Radner in 1985. Of course, he probably wasn't anticipating scandal when he thought ahead to the resale.
And speaking of the difficulties of getting out of the Dakota these days, apartment #67?previously the building's priciest three-bedroom?is also struggling to lure a buyer. The apartment hit the market roughly a year ago for $14.95 million, chopped its price to $12.5 million, and has now returned with a new broker for $10.95 million. The decor, at least, seems a better match for the building's image than Madden's place:
