A mere three months ago, when Canadian developer Stephane Boivin bought Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz's Soho townhouse for $5.5 million, he claimed he was purchasing it "for personal use." As it turns out, Boivin is crafty. He is going to use the house personally—by personally having it torn down and built into condos. This is upsetting people because the 2,500-square-foot house, in addition to its recent Beastie Boy history, was built in 1824 and is part of the proposed South Village historical district. Unfortunately for preservationists, the Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation has been proposing that district for a decade, to no avail, so the chances of stopping Boivin in his tracks appear slim. Boivin, who sounds like he'd get along great with Ben Shaoul, is also developing another condo building right down the street.
