Something is afoot at the old Bed-Stuy church at 261 Skillman Street. The block-through property fronts on both Skillman and Bedford Avenue, and it sold to a developer for $4.1 million back in 2008. Since then, it's sat pretty much untouched, but Brownstoner reports that crews are currently demolishing the back of the church. Permits renewed last month call for for structural work, partial demolition, interior demolition, and enlargement of the building, plus mechanical and plumbing work. Karl Fischer is still the architect on the project, so the new building will likely have six-stories, 40 units, 31 underground parking spaces, and a community space on the ground floor.
No work is being done on the church's facade, so there's still hope that it will be preserved.
