Micro apartments are so popular that even museums are getting in on the action. On January 23, the Museum of the City of New York and Citizens Housing and Planning Council (CHPC) launch the exhibit "Making Room," which features a fully-outfitted 325-square-foot apartment. The show was inspired by Bloomberg's adAPT competition which tasked developers and designers to create a building filled with micro units. We mistakenly said that the exhibit was inspired by Bloomberg's adAPT competition, but a rep from CHPC tells us that it was actually the opposite. "The AdAPT NYC program exists only because of the three-year 'Making Room' research study by CHPC. It was their study and report that inspired Mayor Bloomberg to launch this innovative pilot program."
The built-out studio apartment will feature transformable furniture that can turn one room into four, and the exhibit will showcase small spaces from other cities around the world. But the most exciting part of the exhibit is that the top proposals from the adAPT contest will be displayed, so we'll finally know what the micro homes of our future look like.
