In response to buildings like Stonehenge Village and the Windermere West constructing fancy new amenities and saying that they can only be used by market rate tenants, City Councilman Mark Levine is trying to amend the human rights code to protect rent-stabilized tenants from discrimination. "Obviously, race and gender and sexual orientation, religion are all protected classes, but renter status is not — and until we change that, we're not going to have a legal recourse to combat this," he said. This follows an official complaint from Public Advocate Letitia James and a proposal from an assemblymember to start fining landlords. [NYDN; previously]
