After failing after several price chops and three years on the market, the Charles Gwathmey-designed duplex penthouse at the former Police Building at 240 Centre Street will return to the market, inexplicably asking more than it was originally listed for in 2008. The Journal reports that the 6,600-square-foot spread, located in the building's old gymnasium, will be listed for $31.495 million. In 2008, it was listed for $30 million, and then saw four price cuts and entered the PriceChopper Hall of Fame when it was last listed in 2011 for a paltry $14.5 million. So, naturally, given the bonkersness of the market and the other insanely price properties in Manhattan, the owners, ex-Bear Stearns chief operating officer Alvin Einbender and his wife Joan, decided to put it back on the market. Not because they need to, mind you, but because they want to downsize. An 80-by-40-foot great room is a little large.
