TD Bank is currently headquartered in New Jersey, but it's in talks to be the anchor tenant of One Vanderbilt, a 65-story tower planned for the block west of Grand Central. The trick with Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed One Vanderbilt, which would take up a full square block between 42nd and 43rd streets as well as Vanderbilt and Madison avenues, is that developer SL Green was all gung-ho about the project when Midtown East's controversial rezoning proposal was nearing approval towards the end of Mayor Bloomberg's term, which would have allowed for a taller tower, among other things.
Though everyone was pretty sure SL Green would go ahead and build a modified office building anyway, the news of TD Bank's interest, first reported by the Post and then by the Journal, basically confirms that yes, this skyscraper, and major addition to the city skyline, is going to rise. A prior figure puts 1Vandy's total size at 1.6 million square feet and, based on renderings, it looks like it'll be taller than the nearby Chrysler Building (1,046 feet) when complete. SL Green has kept quiet on the tower's status, but nonetheless there's enough evidence to deem it time to chalk up another on-the-rise member of the thousand-foot cluba height that, by now, really doesn't seem that crazy anymore.
