Starchitects are flocking to New York City to build a crazy number of sometimes crazy-looking projects, and the number of new developments hitting the market this season is equally insane. It logically follows that a metric crapload of apartments are planned and/or under construction in Manhattan, and listings search engine Hotpads, which is owned by Zillow, has mapped out a whole bunch of them. Using ALN data, the folks there have pinpointed 30 new buildings, from Karim Rashid's zany neon invention for East Harlem to Robert A.M. Stern's limestone (naturally) tower for the Zeckendorfs on Park Avenue. With its 458 residential units, 15 Hudson Yards will flood the West Side with inventory; and across town, JDS Development's curvy twin towers connected by a sky bridge, designed by the ubiquitous SHoP, are slated to house 800 apartments. All told, Hotpads calculates an even 7,000 apartments are headed Manhattan's way. Will all these apartments bring down sky-high condo prices or area rents? Probably not, but it's cool to see where new developments are clustering and what's en route, in map form.
There are more projects in the works that aren't on this map, so if you spot any developments Hotpads missed, drop us a line and we'll let them know. UPDATE: One tipster astutely noted that, among several Tribeca new developments that are missing, one biggie is 56 Leonard Street, which will bring 145 Herzog & de Meuron condos to the area.
For comparison, Hotpads has done the same breakdown for Boston (4,776 apartments), Los Angeles (18,563 apartments), and development-happy San Francisco (93 new buildings).
