Sometimes, renovations lead to the destruction of beautiful things. Case in point: Rizzoli Bookstore. Other times, they unveil ghosts of neighborhoods past. The latter was the case when it came to a porcelain enamel sign on the Upper West Side, which was revealed during the course of construction at a totally standard-looking bodega. It reads, in some font of yore, "Hudes Delicatessen." Turns out, according to sign experts New York Neon, that Hudes operated in that spot in the 1930s and 1940s. Its owners also operated the considerably more famous (and still extant) Carnegie Deli in Midtown for decades. Now you know.
