The New York City Housing Authority is infamous for not making timely or adequate repairs to apartmentsjust this week, the agency was sued by 20 tenants of Castle Hill Houses in the Bronxbut the aging buildings will see wide-scale improvements in basic infrastructure thanks to a $100 million plan announced by the city and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The improvements aim to cut NYCHA's utility bill, currently $576 million a year, and make the projects more energy-efficient. It will start with 89 buildings, replacing old boilers and lighting, but in the future, the program could mean solar panel arrays atop some of the 300 buildings.
