With City Planning's stamp of approval in the bag, it was all but guaranteed that One Vanderbilt would be approved and now it's official. City Council unanimously voted in favor of the Vanderbilt Avenue rezoning, which will allow developer SL Green to build a 1,501-foot tall office tower directly beside Grand Central. Kohn Pedersen Fox will design the 63-story, 1.6 million-square-foot skyscraper, and TD Bank has already signed on as an anchor tenant. The agreement includes $220 million of public improvements, including new subway entrances and a large public plaza. SL Green's press release states that construction "is expected to commence immediately, beginning with the demolition of the site," so Midtown East better brace for years of disruptions. The tower and transit upgrades should be complete by 2021.
