The agitating grannies have pulled it off. Last night, the City Council granted approval to the plan for Swedish DIY furniture king Ikea to open its first NYC store on the shores of Red Hook in Brooklyn. Though not yet a done deal, the Swedes are unlikely to be denied; notes the NYT, "open support from City Council leaders practically guarantees passage by the full Council next week." Also to come on the waterfront: a Fairway supermarket, then perhaps a cruise ship terminal, a new Brooklyn Brewery, and a space elevator connecting Earth to low-orbit interplanetary trading vessels.
