Regular readers of the Village Voice's "Shelter" column know that its raison d'etre is finding people with impossible housing deals?a half-bedroom, no bath share in the West Village for $312/month; a job house-sitting for mongrel pets in Astoria for $192/month (utilities included). This week, Shelter uncovers a couple paying market rent?$2,200?in the Financial District. Puh-leeze. Standards, people. Luckily, NYPress' rival "Property Tales" column picks up the slack with a tale of life in an SRO on the Hell's Angels block in the East Village. Notes the profilee, "It's kind of a family. I mean, with so many people sharing the same bathroom and all. If people don't fit in, they just fade away."
