Little India's Decline

Hello? Sir? The free glass of red wine may be going the way of the Dodo on East 6th Street, the East Village's Little India. Rising commercial rents combined with a 40% drop in customers apparently are threatening the monoethnic nature of the block: the 30 restaurants of yesteryear (okay, the late 90s) now number 19. Meantime, on St. Mark's Place, East Village Books has been forced out of its old space to make way for an expansion of Cafe Mogador. Samosas out, couscous in. Morocco forever!
