Balazs To Build in Meatpacking

More breaking news on the boutique hotel front: Andre Balazs has snapped up a much-discussed lot in the Meatpacking District for $24 million and will use it to build NYC's first Standard Hotel. The lot, bordered by West Street, West 13th Street, Washington Street and Little West 12th Street, is the same spot where developer Stephen Touhey floated the idea for a 31-story hotel/condo combo straddling the High Line, designed by architect Jean Nouvel. That plan is now history; Balazs says his hotel will straddle the High Line, but won't be nearly as tall.
