70 Washington Street in Dumbo: Artists Out, Condos In

Jesse McKinley has a nice piece in today's NYT about Dumbo's ongoing transformation from artists' colony to luxury real estate playground. Much ink has been spilled about the developers, David and Jed Walentas of Two Trees Management, who own a huge chunk of the area, but what comes through in this story is the community's general support for the developers. (Random sniping aside?one discontent observes, "It's just going to be another sterile rich person's neighborhood.") Following its renovation of the Clock Tower building and the Sweeney Building, Two Trees is prepping its biggest makeover yet: turning 70 Washington Street (above) into 225 residential lofts. Construction begins this August; sales start next spring.
