Welcome to Gwathmey's Astor Place

If you've been through Astor Place in the East Village as of late, you know that the open parking lot of yore is history, replaced with a rising structure that's radically remaking a once-great open space. From his apartment 27 floors above Astor Place, photoblogger Jesse Chan Norris is engaging in one of our favorite rituals: tracking its growth, one terrifying image at a time. Check his photo gallery for ongoing documentation. Meantime, we're digging into this rising monolith, a 21-story condo development by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates that will tower over the nearby Cooper Union Foundation Building. Full report this afternoon; scoop to tips@curbed.com.
