An apparent victory for good taste! Plans for the monolithic slab dormitory University House, slated to replace the turn-of-the-century school building on Avenue B that formerly housed CHARAS, appear to be dead.
The Villager reports that developer Gregg Singer is having architects come up with a new design for a dorm at the site, perhaps incorporating the CHARAS building after all. Says the newly preservationist-sounding Singer, "People should realize ? if we wanted to knock this building down, we would have done it a long time ago. Wouldn't it be great to save it? We always wanted to save it." We're getting teary. This man is a hero! Roll credits!
