Polis offers this glamour shot, revealing the latest aging starlet to return to the evening skyline: the Hotel New Yorker sign. Guests at the hotel's lighting party watched by closed-circuit television as the deed was done: "Using an original elevator control handle that was still in use as late as 1994, the general manager of the hotel, Kevin Smith, pulled the lever and after a pregnant pause, the red letters were alight." The mixed-use building ain't what it used to be, but you can still rent a room there, and more interior renovations are planned, according to her Times write-up. No word on whether Muhammad Ali and Fidel Castro will be returning for that gala.
