Mayor Says Not So Fast on Austin Nichols HQ Slam

Attempts to preserve the landmark status of the waterfront Cass Gilbert-designed warehouse at 184 Kent Ave. may be badly burnt, but they aren't quite dead yet, thanks to Mayor Bloomberg's veto of the City Council. Last night, he had a spokesman assuredly deem the former HQ of wholesale grocer Austin, Nichols & Co. "a highly significant building designed by a historically significant architect." Still, the trash-talking council opponents don't intend to let the mayor have his moment of glory very long, as they plan to try for an override vote tomorrow. Quoth one tipster: "I wonder what potty words [Councilman] Simcha Felder will use this time."
