Mayflower Hotel Construction Begins, Taunting Lone Tenant

On Central Park West, construction on the now-defunct Mayflower Hotel has just gotten underway. Reports a special Curbed correspondent, "The neighborhood has clearly expressed their sentiments on the sidewalk sign (above). When I asked a construction worker why they're gutting out the building so carefully, he said that the existing building will be used as part of the base for the new condo towers which will be built on top of it. Another worker chimed in and said that it will not be used as a base?the reason they have to be so careful about what they're tearing down is that there is at least one rent stabilized tenant living in the building. Now it's easier to imagine who might have grafittied the sidewalk sign!" After the jump, a view of the carnage; bonus points for spotting the lone tenant.
