Down a dank flight of stairs just off Seventh Avenue South, Smalls jazz club lived up to its name: a tiny, windowless room (BYOB, natch) that attracted a cult following. Its closing in May 2003 was front page news (in the New York Sun, granted, but still). Now comes word that Small's has just reopened its doors in the same location, this time with a cash bar and under new management. A return to the good old days, or interlopers drafting off its famous fumes? Anyone know the story?
