Opponents Still Not Keen on Whitney Razing Plans

In a shocking twist, 600 Madison Ave. residents have signed a petition decrying the Whitney's planned expansion. What, you don't want major construction in your neighborhood? What, you'd rather have brownstones than a tower? Far more importantly, the City Council continues to wonder whether the museum can't expand without razing the neighboring buildings, one of which bears the coveted "contributing" tag, which basically means it's immune from destruction. For those of you who think the commission is just razzing old Renzo before it cedes to his wishes, let us remind you of what NY Mag's Alex French reported a month ago: "In 40 years of decision-making, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has never issued a certificate of appropriateness to allow for the razing of a contributing building."
