When Celia Cruz passed away in the summer of '03, graffiti artist Chico memorialized the salsa legend with a lively mural on the corner of Houston St. and Avenue B -- painting over a rendering of Pope John Paul II in the process. We can't say how the Holy See felt about this snub, but we can tell you that--nearly two years later--Karol Wojtyla finally got his wall back, although perhaps a little too late to enjoy it. Above is a shot snapped on Sunday afternoon of the then-unfinished piece of street art.
We knew it was going to take a big-time celebrity death to dislodge Celia form her corner, but we had our fingers crossed for Frank Perdue up until the very last second.
