a huge explosion shook the intersection of Washington Place and Sixth Avenue about 45 minutes ago [ed.?email came in at approx. 3:10 p.m.], sending residents pouring out to the very same corner where only a few weeks ago, part of a building fell down. turned out it was a manhole cover popping its cork one day after con ed workers had spent the day ripping up the asphalt, repairing a bunch of pipes and then leaving, saying their work was done. Guess not.Buildings crumbling, streets rumbling? If lessons can be gleaned from this update, surely it's that the West Village is on the verge of the Apocalypse.
