Meet the new Coney Island, sanitized for your protection! Yesterday, the City announced its $83 million redevelopment plan for the old drag. The scheme include some positive ideas—turning Stillwell Avenue into a public midway; a redesigned Steeplechase Plaza featuring the Parachute Pavilion design winner (below)—and some reason for fear—the addition of hotels, possibly a spa and probably a mall on Surf Avenue. Lots of lip service to preserving Coney's quirky vibe; let's hope they're serious. Work underway on the Boardwalk for completion in 2007; the complete makeover by 2009.
