Yesterday was a banner day for a coalition of cultural groups based on E. 4th St. as well as Mayor Bloomberg. The members of Fourth Arts Block (yes, F.A.B.) which includes La MaMa Experimental Theater Club, N.Y. Theater Workshop, Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company and others got to take over the city-owned buildings they already occupy for the bargain-basement price of $1 and Hizzoner got to accept a title he probably wasn't courting: "honorary lesbian," granted by real lesbian and former City Council member Margarita Lopez (far right in the photo).
That's La MaMa founder Ellen Stewart in the middle, wedging the two proud politicians apart with her key. "Let the record show the mayor moved right along after that," quipped Bloomie. To which Lopez later replied: "We like each other for real." BF4-ever bracelets were exchanged in secret after the presser.
