With the hyperboxy New New Museum getting close to topping off on the Bowery, please enjoy this photo of SANAA architect Kazuyo Sejima photographed for the November issue of Vogue by Annie Leibovitz. What does the magazine, or more particularly writer Rowan Moore, have to say about the museum project?
A stack of boxes is exactly what it is, or rather a series of pearly-gray volumes piled with artful carelessness, each off-center to the one below. Being both blocky and stepped, they intentionally echo the profile of classic Manhattan towers, yet the forms of Rockefeller Center and the Empire State will be transformed into something a small child could imagine herself building, which will at the same time be a sophisticated museum of contemporary art.Which will at the same time remind us why we stopped reading architectural criticism. After the jump, for those who must, an in-progress view of the New Museum construction by way of the Curbed Photo Pool.
