Curbed BuildingSpotter Answers: 'Arches' and Mansard

The Addams Family look-alike was spotted by many a reader in the area just north of Union Square. The exact addresses? 115 Fifth Ave. and 881 Broadway. Originally Arnold Constable Dry Goods Store, according to the AIA guide, now it's home of ABC Carpet at street level and the architecture firm Perkins Eastman upstairs, among others. The 19th century building stretches down 19th Street, but was built in stages: Broadway side first (seen above), and the Fifth Avenue cast iron one later. And yes, that's a mansard crown, popularized by a French guy back in the day, then promulgated by Victorians everywhere, who used them "to store ghosts," according to one commenter. Indeed.
